M3GAN 2.0 Review

 


Respect for trying something new but all they did was take an average tech paranoia slasher flick and morph it into a subpar sci-fi actioner that is absurdly heavy on plot and exposition for how stupid it is. Not without its moments that I had fun with (the reoccurring Steven Seagal bit got me!) but by the time it hit the reveal of *who the villain really is* I felt a strong urge to yell "Who cares?!" at the screen. Doesn't have the stones (or MPAA rating) to take this further nor the directional sauce to make the action hit in the heightened stylized manner it so badly wants to. Oh well! C-

Director Trey Edward Shults’ debut film  Krisha  was one of the most criminally underseen gems from last year and the sheer level of talent he displayed in that film was powerful enough for me to be looking forward to any and all of his future projects. Now he’s re-teaming with everyone’s favorite indie distributor A24 for his follow-up project  It Comes at Night , and if this film proves anything, it’s that Shults isn’t fucking around and he’s here to stay because he has made one of the most singularly spellbinding pieces of horror cinema I’ve seen this decade. It Comes at Night  isn’t necessarily a horror film per say, but rather a hellishly intense psychological thriller/family thriller. It’s a very slow burn but that only adds to its effect. Ballerina Review

Made almost exclusively for people who love the sweaty rules-heavy world building of the John Wick franchise which, thankfully, I very much am. Ana De Armas is a full fucking movie star in this; she's able to lift this thing all the way with steely showmanship whilst also delivering with some golden physical comedy and disarming vulnerability - she is just so goddamn watchable. Love the way this thing escalates too. It already starts off in a pretty crazy place but it ending up with Eve in a village comprised entirely of people whose entire purpose is to fucking kill her is such pulpy gonzo catnip for me and it makes for a truly face-melting final set-piece. I'll watch three more of these as well! B

A Ghost Story: Review

I had strong feeling that my experience watching this movie would fuck me up but I had no idea it would fuck me up THIS MUCH. David Lowery's  A Ghost Story  has been one of my most anticipated films of 2017 ever since I first heard about. I really love the way that Lowery builds his films. The two very different  Ain't Them Bodies Saints  and  Pete's Dragon  have a very distinct sense of warmth and empathy at the center. Not to mention, they both look and sound utterly stunning. If anything,  A Ghost Story  has now solidified Lowery's place as one of the most exciting fresh talents working in the business right now.
