Jurassic World: Rebirth Review

 


The best one of these things has hit since Spielberg was behind the camera. Edwards understands the best route for any follow-up isn't cynical self-serious trash but some finely mounted thinly-written wet and wild schlock about corporate greed - this time in big pharma edition! The bits with the family become extremely grating pretty quickly but the set-pieces in this are so deranged and the core trio of movie stars are incredibly fun to watch. The thing that surprised me most about this though is the way Edwards actually attempts to restore the allure of this series and, in some moments, he gets really close. His eye for scale and scope go a really long way and the humanist "Science is for all of us" approach imbues it with an accessible sense of wonder. For a few moments, sitting in 4DX with my dino incubator popcorn bucket, I could actually see the spark of the original. B-

Director Trey Edward Shults’ debut film  Krisha  was one of the most criminally underseen gems from last year and the sheer level of talent he displayed in that film was powerful enough for me to be looking forward to any and all of his future projects. Now he’s re-teaming with everyone’s favorite indie distributor A24 for his follow-up project  It Comes at Night , and if this film proves anything, it’s that Shults isn’t fucking around and he’s here to stay because he has made one of the most singularly spellbinding pieces of horror cinema I’ve seen this decade. It Comes at Night  isn’t necessarily a horror film per say, but rather a hellishly intense psychological thriller/family thriller. It’s a very slow burn but that only adds to its effect. Ballerina Review

Made almost exclusively for people who love the sweaty rules-heavy world building of the John Wick franchise which, thankfully, I very much am. Ana De Armas is a full fucking movie star in this; she's able to lift this thing all the way with steely showmanship whilst also delivering with some golden physical comedy and disarming vulnerability - she is just so goddamn watchable. Love the way this thing escalates too. It already starts off in a pretty crazy place but it ending up with Eve in a village comprised entirely of people whose entire purpose is to fucking kill her is such pulpy gonzo catnip for me and it makes for a truly face-melting final set-piece. I'll watch three more of these as well! B

The Killing of a Sacred Deer: TIFF Review

I'll give this to Yorgos Lanthimos, he has made a truly unforgettable film in  The Killing of Sacred Deer . It's shot beautifully, boasts a tremendous score but is ultimately an empty and overly sadistic exercise in starting out with a really cool concept and then running out of steam way too quickly. It's a solid concept, mirroring that of a profoundly dark Greek tragedy, but the reach far exceeds the grasp and epically misses. The film spells out what's on its mind and doesn't care to further evaluate making the whole experience mind-numbingly frustrating to watch. I like Lanthimos quite a bit but this film is all sorts of problematic, especially when it stoops to the insane level of stupidity presented in its finale. 2 hours has really never felt this long.
