Ballerina Review


Made almost exclusively for people who love the sweaty rules-heavy world building of the John Wick franchise which, thankfully, I very much am. Ana De Armas is a full fucking movie star in this; she's able to lift this thing all the way with steely showmanship whilst also delivering with some golden physical comedy and disarming vulnerability - she is just so goddamn watchable. Love the way this thing escalates too. It already starts off in a pretty crazy place but it ending up with Eve in a village comprised entirely of people whose entire purpose is to fucking kill her is such pulpy gonzo catnip for me and it makes for a truly face-melting final set-piece. I'll watch three more of these as well! B

Director Trey Edward Shults’ debut film  Krisha  was one of the most criminally underseen gems from last year and the sheer level of talent he displayed in that film was powerful enough for me to be looking forward to any and all of his future projects. Now he’s re-teaming with everyone’s favorite indie distributor A24 for his follow-up project  It Comes at Night , and if this film proves anything, it’s that Shults isn’t fucking around and he’s here to stay because he has made one of the most singularly spellbinding pieces of horror cinema I’ve seen this decade. Atomic Blonde: Review

The only useful thing I got out of  Atomic Blonde  is that I really need to get around to finally watching  Stalker . Despite a sleek and sexy aesthetic, a strong lead performance from Charlize Theron, a fun soundtrack, and TWO outstanding one-take action sequences, I found the great majority of  Atomic Blonde  to be pretty unremarkable. Which really sucks for me as this was one of my most anticipated films of the summer.  John Wick  comparisons are pretty misguided, this film is more of a period piece espionage thriller than it is a straight-up action film. But at least the  John Wick  films managed to pack their narratives full of personality and emotional tension. That is really my biggest gripe with this film, I didn't feel a damn thing for anyone or anything. The plot felt convoluted yet somehow underwritten, as did every character.
