The 5 Films I'm Looking Forward To the Most This Summer
1) Logan Lucky (Release Date: August 18th)
Steven Soderbergh is one of my favorite directors of all time and his return after a four-year hiatus from filmmaking, Logan Lucky, looks like we are going to see him recapture the glory of his Ocean's Eleven days. Boasting an absolutely stellar cast, a white trash Ocean's concept, and a new intriguing technique for the independent film releasing strategy, Logan Lucky is guaranteed to be a late summer blast.
2) Good Time (Release Date: August 11th)
Josh and Ben Safdie are the most intriguing names in the independent film industry in this day and age. With under-the-radar masterclasses like Daddy Longlegs and Heaven Knows What, they've more than proven themselves to be this generation's John Cassavettes. Their films evoke a very painfully real atmosphere and they always bring the best OSTs with them. Good Time looks like more of the same and with an astounding cast and some fresh hype from the Cannes Film Festival, it's almost impossible not to be hyped for this film.
3) A Ghost Story (Release Date: July 7th)
David Lowery is a very underrated talent in this modern cinematic climate but it's looking like his latest experimental Sundance hit, A Ghost Story, may be just the film he needs to become somewhat of a household name. He reteams with his Ain't Them Bodies Saints stars in Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara for this profound and complex study and time and nostalgia. This looks like it's going to break my heart in the best way possible and I can not wait.
4) The Big Sick (Release Date: June 23rd)
Kumail Nanjiani is one of my favorite modern comedians and The Big Sick is his first headline film (a film of which he also co-wrote) that also garnered A LOT of praise out of the Sundance Film Festival. I'm a sucker for summer indie comedies that also appeal to my emotional side and it looks like this is exactly that kind of film.
5) Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets (Release Date: July 21st)
Based off one of the most influential comic book series in history, Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets looks to be just about the most unique action blockbuster spectacle of the summer. It also helps that this has been a long-time passion project for director Luc Besson who knows a thing or two about building up exciting and fantastical high-concept ideas for the big screen. You can bet your bottom dollar that I will in the theater opening night to experience this in 3D.
